Apple closed above a $5 trillion market value for the first time on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, ending the day at $342.96, up 0.50%, for a valuation of about $5.005 trillion, according to Dow Jones Market Data. It became the second company to close above that mark, after Nvidia on October 29, 2025. Apple rose on a day when the S&P 500 fell 1.11% and the Nasdaq Composite 1.88% after a hotter-than-expected inflation report.
Apple first traded above $5 trillion during the session on July 28, 2026, and touched it several more times without closing there, including on September 22, when it reached $345.34 and closed at $339.75. The October 14 close came 78 days after that first intraday crossing.
Apple's market value milestones
| Milestone | Date | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| $1 trillion | August 2, 2018 | First US company to reach it, during the session |
| $2 trillion | August 19, 2020 | Reached during the session |
| $3 trillion | January 3, 2022 | Reached during the session; first close above it on June 30, 2023 |
| $4 trillion | October 28, 2025 | Reached during the session, after Nvidia and Microsoft |
| $5 trillion | July 28, 2026 | Reached during the session |
| $5 trillion, first close | October 14, 2026 | Close of $342.96, about $5.005 trillion |

Counted between first intraday crossings, the fifth trillion took 273 days, the shortest gap of the five. The fourth took 1,394 days, because Apple spent 2022 and the first half of 2023 below $3 trillion as rising interest rates cut what investors would pay for large technology companies. Each new trillion is also a smaller percentage gain than the last: going from $4 trillion to $5 trillion is a 25% rise, against 100% from $1 trillion to $2 trillion.
Why Apple rose while technology stocks fell
October 14 was the worst day for the Nasdaq since July. Chipmakers and the companies borrowing to build AI data centers took the heaviest losses: Dell fell 11.27% after a Barclays downgrade, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor index dropped 4.3%. Apple spends far less on AI data centers than Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon or Meta, so a selloff driven by doubts over that spending and by higher rates left it largely untouched, and Bloomberg described it as a relative safe haven. AppleInsider tied the gain to demand for the iPhone 18 Pro, although the data on that was mixed: JPMorgan reported longer delivery times, while UBS found waits about two days shorter than a year earlier.
Apple kept that position through the rest of the week. On Friday, October 16, when the Nasdaq fell 572.99 points, Apple closed at $343.46, up 0.43%. Our report on the September CPI release covers the inflation data behind the week's selling.
