Why Is Portillo's Stock Down Today?
Portillo's cut its full-year outlook and disclosed an 18% corporate workforce reduction, as it chose not to repeat last year's promotions and margins slipped.
- Portillo's fell 7.692% in the 15 minutes after its Q2 2026 report.
- Same-restaurant sales fell 1.2% year-over-year, with transactions down 3.4%, partly because the company chose not to repeat a promotion from a year earlier.
- Restaurant-level adjusted EBITDA margin fell about 190 basis points to 21.7%, and full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance was reset to $92-96 million.
Portillo's Inc. (PTLO) fell 7.692% in the fifteen minutes after its Q2 2026 report. Same-restaurant sales fell 1.2% year-over-year, with transactions down 3.4%. CEO Brett Patterson attributed much of the decline to a lapping effect: the company chose not to repeat last year's buy-one-get-one beef promotion and discontinued a prior-year breakfast initiative, together representing roughly 250 basis points of headwind, along with some cannibalization from new locations.
Portillo's is the Chicago-style fast-casual chain known for its hot dogs and Italian beef, with 109 locations at quarter-end. Restaurant-level adjusted EBITDA margin fell about 190 basis points to 21.7%, and the company reset its full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance to $92-96 million, saying the outlook reflects a deliberate choice to protect the value customers get rather than raise prices to match inflation or run aggressive low-margin promotions.
Two other disclosures in the same release stand out. On July 31, days before this report, Portillo's cut its corporate headquarters and field-management workforce by about 18%. And on August 4, the day before earnings, the company named Kevin Kalicak, a 25-year restaurant-finance veteran from Darden Restaurants, as its new CFO effective September 7, 2026. On a more positive note, Portillo's opened its first-ever airport location at Dallas-Fort Worth using a smaller-footprint kitchen format, and has its first inline downtown Chicago restaurant planned for later in 2026.
