Why Is Duolingo Stock Down Today?

Duolingo beat Q2 2026 estimates and daily active users accelerated to 23% growth, but the stock fell on a soft forward revenue guide and compressed margins.

Duolingo (DUOL) fell 12.335% in the fifteen minutes after its Q2 2026 report, even though the quarter itself was a clean beat: EPS of $0.66 against a $0.61 estimate, and revenue of $298.45 million against $295.62 million expected. Daily active users grew 23% year-over-year, an acceleration from the first quarter's pace.

Duolingo operates a mobile and web language-learning platform, along with math and music courses, built on gamified lessons and increasingly AI-generated content. CEO Luis von Ahn described the quarter as strong, pointing to the 23% daily-active-user growth as validation of the company's strategy to improve the product and prioritize user growth. Despite that framing, forward guidance told a more cautious story: Q3 2026 revenue guidance of roughly $302 million came in slightly below what analysts were modeling, and operating margin fell to 11.4% from 13.2% a year earlier, alongside a sequential decline in free-cash-flow margin. That combination — strong current-quarter engagement metrics paired with softer forward guidance and thinner margins — is consistent with a company investing heavily in its AI-driven product roadmap ahead of the revenue that investment is expected to eventually produce.
