Moderna Q2 2026: Revenue Beat Overshadowed by Norovirus Trial Miss
Moderna reported second-quarter 2026 results before the market opened on July 31, 2026.
- Shares fell 5.4% Friday to $54.82, even though Q2 revenue of $145 million and a GAAP loss of $1.97 per share both beat analyst estimates.
- Moderna's norovirus vaccine candidate, mRNA-1403, did not meet the statistical bar for early success at its Phase 3 interim analysis; the company is enrolling an additional cohort.
- The company also disclosed a $950 million litigation cash payment made in July, on top of the earnings news.

Moderna reported second-quarter 2026 results before the market opened on 31 July 2026. Shares fell about 4.1% to $55.56 in early trading and extended the decline to close the session down 5.4% at $54.82.
The beat that didn't help
Moderna reported second-quarter revenue of $145 million, ahead of the roughly $106.7 million analysts had modeled, and a GAAP net loss of $1.97 per share, narrower than the $2.13 per-share loss a year earlier. Beating estimates on both lines is normally a stock-positive setup. It was not enough here because of what came with it.
The pipeline setback
Moderna's norovirus vaccine candidate, mRNA-1403, did not meet the statistical criteria for early success at its Phase 3 interim analysis. The company said it is preparing to enroll an additional cohort so the blinded trial can continue rather than stopping the program. A vaccine trial not clearing an interim bar is not the same as a failed trial, but it removes the near-term catalyst investors had been pricing in and pushes any readout further out.
The other number in the release
Alongside the trial news, Moderna disclosed a $950 million litigation cash payment made in July, and cash and investments totaled $6.9 billion at quarter-end before that payment went out. The company also lowered its full-year cost-of-sales estimate to about $1.7 billion and its R&D expense estimate to about $2.9 billion, projecting year-end cash of $4.7 billion to $5.2 billion.
What to watch
The next concrete marker is the additional norovirus cohort data, since that determines whether mRNA-1403 stays on its original timeline or slips further. Quarterly cash burn against the guided year-end cash range is the other number worth tracking, given the litigation payment already made in July.
