Amazon plans to invest more than €16 billion in Germany in 2027, it said on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the federal government's Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin. About €4.8 billion of that goes to expanding the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) cloud region. The rest covers logistics sites, a second robotics and AI research lab in Berlin, Amazon Leo satellite internet and Prime Video productions. The headline reached the MoveSurge news feed at 05:09:24 ET, and Amazon shares barely moved in thin overnight trading.
What the €16 billion pays for
AWS is the only part with a number attached. Its €4.8 billion is about 30% of the total, and it adds to what AWS calls a double-digit billion-euro sum spent in Frankfurt since that region opened in October 2014. Amazon's English release says the Frankfurt money runs "through 2027", while the German release puts it in 2027, so the spending period is not fully clear.
- Cloud and AI: €4.8 billion for AWS Frankfurt. Separately, the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, which keeps data inside the EU, has been generally available in Germany since January 2026.
- Logistics: modernisation of Bad Hersfeld, Dortmund and Werne finishes in 2027, and work at Koblenz, Pforzheim and Rheinberg runs into 2028. A centre in Zweibrücken has opened and one in Könnern is under construction. Amazon expects these projects to add more than 3,000 jobs.
- Research: a second robotics and AI lab in Berlin, which Amazon says doubles its research presence in the capital.
- Amazon Leo: 24 rocket launches booked with Arianespace for the low-Earth-orbit satellite network.
- Prime Video: more than 15 new German productions through the end of 2027.
How 2027 compares with earlier years
Five days before the summit, Amazon said it had invested €15 billion in Germany in 2025, €1 billion more than in 2024, and more than €100 billion since 2010. The 2027 plan is therefore about €1 billion above the 2025 level. It keeps the pace of recent years rather than marking a jump. Amazon has not given a figure for 2026.

Amazon counts more than 40,000 permanent jobs and more than 100 sites in Germany, including about 3,000 AWS employees. Economy minister Katherina Reiche called the plan "a clear vote of confidence in Germany as a location for the future." The federal government organised the summit in Berlin on October 19 and 20.
How Amazon stock moved
