Why Is MarketWise Stock Down Today?

MarketWise is little changed today, holding near the level it settled at after a sharp drop on a GAAP loss that missed estimates by a wide margin — even though preliminary billings figures released weeks earlier had shown 56% year-over-year growth.

  • MarketWise is little changed today, holding near the level it settled at after a sharp post-earnings drop.
  • The company reported a Q2 2026 GAAP loss of $0.24 per share, versus a $0.55 profit estimated.
  • Preliminary billings figures released in July had shown Q2 billings up 56% year over year, with full-year guidance raised 10% to $330 million.

MarketWise shares are little changed today, holding near the level the stock settled at after falling 23.2% on this morning's second-quarter 2026 results. The financial-publishing subscription company reported a GAAP loss of $0.24 per share, against a Wall Street estimate of $0.55 in profit, on revenue of $75.81 million versus $78.72 million expected.

The result contrasts with preliminary billings figures MarketWise released in July, which showed billings — cash collected for subscriptions, recognized as GAAP revenue gradually over time — up 56% year over year, alongside a 10% raise to full-year billings guidance. A business can be billing aggressively while GAAP revenue and earnings lag, especially when spending heavily on marketing to acquire subscriptions, since that spend hits net income immediately but shows up in revenue only gradually. This is the second consecutive quarter this pattern has produced a double-digit stock decline: the first quarter of 2026 saw billings surge 15% while GAAP EPS missed by roughly 134% and the stock fell 10%.
