Why Is Block Stock Down Today?
Block beat on both revenue and adjusted EPS and raised full-year guidance, with payment volume growth accelerating — even as GAAP net income fell sharply from a year earlier.
- Block, Inc. fell 9.091% in the 15 minutes after its Q2 2026 report.
- Revenue was $6.62 billion, above the $6.485 billion estimate, and adjusted EPS was $1.02 versus $0.87 expected.
- Total gross payment volume growth accelerated to 7.5% year-over-year, from 4.4% the prior quarter, reaching $66.6 billion.
Block, Inc. (XYZ) fell 9.091% in the fifteen minutes after its Q2 2026 report, despite what most independent coverage described as a beat-and-raise quarter. Revenue came in at $6.62 billion against a $6.485 billion estimate, and adjusted EPS was $1.02 against $0.87 expected. Total gross payment volume growth accelerated to 7.5% year-over-year, up from 4.4% the prior quarter, reaching $66.6 billion, and the company raised full-year 2026 guidance to $12.5 billion in gross profit and $4.02 in adjusted EPS.
Block, run by CEO Jack Dorsey, operates Cash App, a consumer finance app, and Square, a merchant point-of-sale and payments business. The one clearly weaker figure in the release was GAAP net income, which fell to $88.5 million from $538.5 million a year earlier — an 83.6% decline — even as the adjusted profit measure beat estimates. Block has been in the middle of a major restructuring since February 2026 that cut headcount by more than 40%, to under 6,000 employees, as part of a shift toward smaller, more automated teams; that restructuring carried $450-500 million in charges that were substantially complete by the end of the second quarter, and is a plausible driver of the gap between the strong adjusted numbers and the much weaker GAAP profit figure.
Block's Afterpay installment-payments unit also remains under regulatory scrutiny, with a multi-state attorney-general inquiry opened in December 2025 and a Senate Democrats information request from November 2025 examining its underwriting and fee practices — an unresolved overhang that sits alongside an otherwise improving core business.
