Progressive shares closed at $213.51 on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, down 4.2%, after the insurer's September and third-quarter results showed premium growth slowing to 2% for the month and its personal auto policy count slipping from August. Third-quarter earnings excluding investment gains and losses were $4.60 a share, while GAAP earnings fell to $4.37 from $4.45 a year earlier.

The results reached the MoveSurge news feed at 8:23:33 a.m. ET, before the open. PGR was at $217.00 in premarket trading, barely moved in the first minute to $216.95, down 0.02%, and was at $212.00 ten minutes later, down 2.30%. The decline deepened after the open, with the stock down as much as 7% during the day before it recovered to its 4.2% loss.

Growth slowed in September

Progressive publishes results every month, so investors could compare September directly with the two months before it. Net premiums written grew 2% in September to $7,255 million, against 5% in July and 6% in August, and total policies in force grew 6% from a year earlier after 7% in each of the previous two months.

Personal auto, the core of the business, still had about 7.4% more policies than a year earlier, at roughly 28.2 million. The month-to-month count went the other way: agency and direct auto together held 28.195 million policies at the end of September, against 28.222 million at the end of August, about 27,000 fewer. The Insurer tied the share drop to that month-over-month decline in policies.

A better combined ratio against a one-off comparison

The third-quarter combined ratio, claims and expenses as a share of premiums, improved to 88.7 from 89.5. The year-ago quarter carried about $950 million of policyholder credits in Florida, a charge that does not recur, so the improvement says less about underwriting than the headline suggests. Net income fell 3% to $2,542 million because investments swung to $170 million of realized losses from $295 million of gains a year earlier, which is why GAAP earnings fell even as the adjusted figure beat. Premiums written for the quarter rose 4% to $22,301 million, against 10% growth a year earlier.

It closed down 4.2% at $213.51 after September results showed net premiums written growing only 2% and personal auto policies falling by about 27,000 from August. Third-quarter EPS excluding investment results was $4.60.

88.7, against 89.5 a year earlier. September alone came in at 90.0.
