- Revenue of $8.09 billion was below the roughly $8.87 billion forecast, the second quarterly revenue shortfall in a row.

NextEra Energy earned an adjusted $1.24 a share in the third quarter of 2026, above the $1.18 analysts expected, but the stock fell on Wednesday. The results reached the MoveSurge news feed at 07:33:20 ET on October 21, 2026. In thin premarket trading NEE fell 0.50% in the first minute, from $79.63 to $79.23, and was down 1.29% ten minutes after the headline. The stock opened higher, according to Investing.com, then drifted lower, and at 15:56 ET it was at $78.34, down 0.65% from Tuesday's close of about $78.85.
The profit beat came with revenue of $8.09 billion, below the roughly $8.87 billion analysts had forecast, according to Investing.com and 24/7 Wall St. That was the second quarter in a row: in July, second-quarter revenue of $7.53 billion also fell short of forecasts, according to the results line that reached our news feed on July 24, while adjusted earnings beat. For a regulated utility, revenue includes fuel costs that are passed on to customers without a profit margin, so the earnings line says more about the business than the sales line does.
NextEra third-quarter 2026 results
| Q3 2026 | Estimate | Q3 2025 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjusted EPS | $1.24 | $1.18 | $1.13 |
| Adjusted earnings | $2.592B | n/a | $2.348B |
| GAAP net income | $4.775B | n/a | $2.438B |
| GAAP EPS | $2.28 | n/a | $1.18 |
| Revenue | $8.09B | $8.87B | $7.97B |
Adjusted earnings per share rose 9.7% from a year earlier, with growth at both businesses. Florida Power & Light, the regulated utility, earned $1.62 billion, or $0.77 a share, up from $1.463 billion. NextEra Energy Resources, which builds and runs wind, solar and battery projects, earned an adjusted $1.247 billion, or $0.59 a share, up from $1.102 billion.

Backlog, data center hubs and nuclear
NextEra Energy Resources added 3.7 gigawatts of projects to its backlog in the quarter, 2.4 gigawatts of it battery storage. After 1.8 gigawatts went into service, the backlog stood at about 36.7 gigawatts. The company has also signed three federal power hubs totaling about 16.5 gigawatts, two in Texas and one in Pennsylvania, with $5.7 billion of initial funding. NextEra builds those hubs for fees and does not put in its own capital. The Duane Arnold nuclear plant in Iowa is due back in service no later than the first quarter of 2029, and a Department of Energy loan of up to $1.9 billion for the restart has closed.
Why the stock slipped after the beat
On the call, chief financial officer Mike Dunne repeated that NextEra expects to need about $12 billion to $17 billion of new equity through 2032. Selling new shares spreads future profit across more stock, and Investing.com flagged that dilution in its analysis of the results. The pending combination with Dominion Energy also weighed in the day's coverage. Shareholders approved it on September 3, Virginia holds hearings in November and South Carolina in December, regulators are expected to rule in January 2027, and the companies expect to close in the second half of 2027.
The forecast did not change. NextEra reaffirmed 2026 adjusted earnings of $3.92 to $4.02 a share, and chief executive John Ketchum said "we expect to be at the high end of our range despite those impacts," referring to weak wind in the fourth quarter. The company still targets adjusted EPS growth of 8% or more a year through 2032 from a 2025 base of $3.71.
Just before the second-quarter release on July 24, 2026, NEE was at $90.75 in our data and fell 0.39% in the first minute after that headline. At $78.34 on Wednesday it was 13.7% lower, even though adjusted earnings beat forecasts in both quarters. Before Wednesday's release it was trading 0.99% above Tuesday's close, so the first-minute drop took back part of an early gain.
