National CineMedia, the largest cinema-advertising network in the US, agreed on August 11 to acquire Captivate Holdings from private-equity firm Generation Partners for a $275 million enterprise value. Captivate is the company behind the small screens in office elevators and building lobbies — a digital out-of-home network of more than 26,000 displays across commercial office buildings and residential properties in 170 US and Canadian markets.

The strategic logic is audience-following. NCM sells advertisers a premium video audience in movie theaters — attentive, but only reachable a few times a month. Captivate reaches what is substantially the same professional demographic in the places it spends every weekday: office elevators, lobbies, and residential buildings. Combining them creates a platform of more than 48,000 screens across theaters, offices, and residences in 185 markets, including every one of the top 100 — an advertising product that can follow a viewer from home to work to a Friday-night movie. CEO Tom Lesinski framed it as a milestone in NCM's evolution and a key step toward a market-defining premium video and digital out-of-home platform.

The deal also marks a notable exit for Generation Partners, which has owned Captivate since 2013 — an unusually long private-equity hold — and it extends an acquisitive stretch for NCM, which bought Spotlight Cinema Networks, the luxury-cinema advertising specialist, in late 2025. A cinema-advertising company spending $275 million to diversify where its screens live is a statement about where it believes the growth is: in the audience, not the venue. The announcement landed alongside NCM's fiscal second-quarter results, released the same day.
