Coinbase Q2 revenue misses estimates as trading and recurring sales weaken
Coinbase reported a $1.36-per-share loss on $1.22 billion of revenue, while lower transaction and subscription revenue left third-quarter execution dependent on both trading participation and recurring products.
- Coinbase reported a second-quarter loss of $1.36 per share versus an expected loss of $0.15, with revenue of $1.22 billion versus the supplied $1.30 billion consensus.
- Transaction revenue decreased 21% year over year to $599 million, while subscription and services revenue declined 12.2% to $555.1 million.
- Coinbase guided third-quarter subscription and services revenue to $500 million to $580 million and reported approximately $130 million of quarter-to-date transaction revenue.
Coinbase reported a second-quarter loss of $1.36 per share, compared with an expected loss of $0.15, while revenue of $1.22 billion fell short of the supplied $1.30 billion consensus. The simultaneous shortfalls matter for COIN exposure because the quarter weakened across both trading-linked revenue and the recurring businesses intended to diversify Coinbase beyond transaction fees.
The miss extended across both principal revenue streams
Transaction revenue decreased 21% year over year to $599 million, while subscription and services revenue declined 12.2% to $555.1 million, according to Reuters. Total revenue was 18.5% below the year-earlier period.
Coinbase recorded a net loss of $359.5 million, compared with net income of $1.43 billion a year earlier. The result included a $209.5 million reduction in the carrying value of crypto investments, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Market-share gains did not prevent lower transaction revenue
Coinbase's direct second-quarter earnings presentation reported crypto trading-volume market share of 10.3%, up from 9.1% in the first quarter and the company's third consecutive quarterly record. The presentation also showed crypto spot trading volume of $146.4 billion, compared with $192.5 billion in the first quarter, while derivatives trading volume was broadly steady at $1.06 trillion.
That combination sharpens the operating read-through: Coinbase captured a larger portion of measured industry activity, but the mix and amount of customer trading were still insufficient to protect transaction revenue. The presentation said spot-share gains were concentrated in crypto-to-fiat trading, Coinbase's highest-revenue channel, while derivatives gains reflected traction in perpetual products.
Recurring revenue remains substantial but also contracted
Subscription and services generated 48% of net revenue during the quarter, according to Coinbase's earnings presentation. That contribution remains a meaningful buffer against dependence on spot trading fees, but the year-over-year decline shows that the recurring portfolio did not fully offset weaker transaction revenue.
For the third quarter, Coinbase projected subscription and services revenue of $500 million to $580 million and reported approximately $130 million of transaction revenue through the most recent Sunday, the Journal said. Management also reduced its full-year adjusted-expense outlook by $100 million.
Read-through for crypto trading platforms
Robinhood separately reported a 38% year-over-year decline in second-quarter crypto transaction revenue, Reuters reported. That comparison indicates that softer crypto-trading monetization was not unique to Coinbase, although one peer result does not determine how much of Coinbase's miss reflected industry conditions, product mix or company-specific execution.
The interpretation now turns on whether Coinbase converts its higher trading-volume share into stronger transaction revenue, where subscription and services lands within the $500 million to $580 million range, and whether newer products such as derivatives and prediction markets become material enough to reduce dependence on spot activity.
