Why Is Baidu Stock Down Today?

Advertising fell 19%. GPU cloud grew 283%. The group still missed, and the shares took it badly.

Baidu fell 12.38% to $90.84 after second-quarter revenue came in at RMB 31.3 billion, down 4% from a year earlier and short of the RMB 31.96 billion analysts expected. The headline miss is real, but it hides the more useful fact: Baidu is now two businesses moving in opposite directions at speed.

The advertising business is shrinking fast

Online marketing — the search advertising that has funded Baidu for two decades — brought in RMB 13.1 billion, down 19% year over year. That is not a soft quarter; that is a structural decline. Advertisers in China have pulled back against a property-market slump and cautious consumers, and search advertising is among the first budgets cut when demand weakens.

The AI business is growing fast enough to matter

AI-powered revenue rose 25% to RMB 12.5 billion. The number that shows the pace of the shift is the mix: that business is now 50% of general business revenue, up from 43% just one quarter earlier. A seven-point shift in a single quarter is unusually quick for a company this size.

Underneath it, GPU Cloud revenue grew 283% year over year, accelerating from 184% the previous quarter. GPU cloud means renting out access to the specialised chips that train and run AI models — capacity Baidu owns and can sell by the hour. AI Cloud infrastructure revenue overall grew 50%. Accelerating growth off a rising base is the rarer pattern, and it is the part of these results that is genuinely working.

Why the shares still met heavy selling pressure

Two things explain a 12.38% decline on a quarter with a growth engine in it. First, arithmetic: advertising is still much the larger business, so a 19% decline there overwhelms a 25% gain in AI on the group line, which is why total revenue fell 4% despite the AI acceleration. Second, mix: cloud infrastructure carries different economics from search advertising, which earned very high margins for years. Replacing advertising revenue with cloud revenue changes what a given yuan of sales is worth.

The question these results pose is one of timing rather than direction. The AI side is compounding at a rate that would eventually dominate the group; the advertising side is contracting now. Whether the crossover arrives before the decline does more damage is what the next several quarters will settle, and this quarter moved the mix meaningfully closer to it.
